Meet Becchara Palmer and Louise Bawden, our No.1 beach volleyball team in the countdown to the London 2012 Olympics.
-
Strong Commonwealth Games medal chance Eloise Amberger opens our minds to synchronised swimming. She bravely posed for our August (61) issue on a rainy day in Sydney.
-
Rising beach volleyball talents Justine and Jordan Mowen are certainly making an impression - on and off the court. They definitely caused a stir at the photo shoot for Alpha's June 2010 issue on Kurrawa Beach, Gold Coast.
-
For some reason, our world-beating female hockey team is full of blue-eyed blondes - including Casey Eastham, here looking her very best in our knockout beach photo-shoot.
-
With the Delhi Commonwealth Games on the way, Bronte is one of the highlights of our April 2010 issue. Bronte, if you remember, is a freestyle champion, and one of the members of the 4x200m relay team that won gold in Beijing. She's always looked great - but who knew she could look this sexy?
-
Meet the gorgeous Melissa Moyle, Perth Lynx star, ex-model, and star of our March 2010 issue. We could add stuff here about basketball and mention how the editor broke down in tears of joy when he saw the pics, but you're already off looking at them, aren't you...?
-
When we photographed Lydia for our February 2010 issue, we were just a magazine with hopes and dreams. The fit and stunning Lydia was our gold-medal contender for the aerial skiing at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, but otherwise unknown. Then, of course, she stormed to Olympic gold, our dreams came true, and she's the nation's darling. But has she forgotten us? We don't know.
-
With the Winter Olympics on the horizon, we talked to rising ski-cross star Katya Crema in January 2010. Ski cross is a new sport, in which four racers speed down a course filled with bumps and obstacles. It's very demanding, and you need to be extremely fit to do it, as our pics show. And toned. And good-looking. Ahem.
-
Fliss is one of Australia's best triathletes - which means one of the best in the world. When we talked to her late last year, she was just getting back into training, although to anyone who saw these pics, she already looked in incredible shape. Have a look, and if you don't agree wholeheartedly, send us a letter or something.
-
Who said squash was played by sweaty middle-ages blokes? Aussie squash star Donna Urquhart will change your view. After being photographed at Daisy Hill Squash Centre for Alpha's October 2009 issue, Donna went on to the British and World Opens in September 2009. She produced the biggest wins of her career reaching the quarter-finals of the British Open in the UK and the main draw of the World Opens in Amsterdam.
-
Phillip Island's MotoGP just wouldn't be the same without them. Back in November 2009, we asked MotoGP Grid Girls Nioka Williams, Jessie Hultgren, and Tracey-Lee Beswick to pose for Alpha. They obliged, and boy were we glad. The girls are masters at keeping their smiles firmly on, despite standing on baking asphalt in searing heat, wearing heels, holding signs, flags or parasols for the benefit of granite-faced men in motorbike helmets. And us, of course.
-
Perth pole vaulter Vicky Parnov is gearing towards London 2012, while also working full-time. Like her aunty Tatiana Grigorieva (kind of - Vicky is the niece of Tatiana's ex-husband Viktor Chistiakov), Vicky is a pole vaulter with every conceivable kind of talent.
-
One of the big hits of the Beijing Olympics was BMX, and one of the new hot stars of the sport is Aussie Caroline Buchanan. At just 18, she was too young for Beijing, but is a sprinter par excellence, in both the BMX and mountain bike four-cross. A self-admitted tomboy, Caroline was happy to show her other side for Alpha in September 2009.
-
In July 2009, our Alpha females were Alex Croak (blonde) and Sharleen Stratton, partly because they were Olympic divers going for gold at the World Championships, and partly because they were gorgeous. Everything went well, as you can see; we even picked up this piece of handy trivia: to get to the top of her sport, Sharleen overcame a fear of both heights and deep water. Respect.
-
Gorgeous young Aussie golfer Nikki Garrett appeared in our June 2009 issue, dressed in gear that would surely be frowned upon by the LPGA. Never mind: it was smiled on by a huge number of Alpha readers, and that's what counts. Check out the video of Nikki, elsewhere on this site.
-
If you want a gentle introduction to the world of gyms and muscle, what better way than Taesha, heroine of our April 2009 issue? She's a champion natural bodybuilder, which means the emphasis is less on taking steroids and being huge, and more on muscle tone, symmetry and performance. And, let's face it, you can't argue with the results.
-
Lauryn Eagle: water-ski champ, model, TV presenter, fitness trainer, and president of lookin' damn fine in a bikini. After a tough 12 months personally, Lauryn is back doing all of the above, including this outstanding shoot for us in the March '09 issue.
-
The annual XXXX Gold Beach Cricket series at Coolangatta Beach on the Gold Coast, is now a wildly successful annual event. Not least because of the beautiful XXXX Angels, the professional dance troop who fire the crowd up during breaks in play. Alpha tried to get them to actually play cricket, and it kinda nearly worked, too.
-
With a new TV deal, the Nutri-Grain Ironman and Ironwoman series is finally on the up, helped in no small measure by the obvious appeal of blonde bombshells Alyce Bennett, Naomi Flood, Courntey Hancock and Gemma Newbiggin. Gonna make sure you tune in now, aren't you?
-
One of the stars of our 2008 Hot Issue, Mel Adams has been pole-vaulting since she was 11 (with occasional breaks to sleep) and hopes to compete in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She's also a model, and was once a Miss Teen Australia finalist. But you suspected as much already.
-
Any piece you read about Kate Hollywood will include the phrase "blonde bombshell" somewhere, and who are we to disappoint? And of course there's that surname: "Hollywood" throws up all sorts of mental images on which an art director can capitalise. Alpha took took the glam hotel option for this 2008 shoot featured in our December Issue.
-
Having finished fourth in the 2008 Triathlon World Championships in Vancouver, Erin rocketed into medal calculation ahead of the Beijing Olympics. However, a virus four weeks out from the start of the Games robbed her of valuable training time. Erin finished in 22nd place, but her teammates Emma Snowsill and Emma Moffatt took first and third place. However, Erin is spurred-on to train hard aiming her efforts at the Games in London in 2012.
-
Funny the power of telly. Once Fox began showing the ANZ Netball Championships, Alpha started appreciating the finer qualities of the sport. Not least the Adelaide Thunderbirds, who in November 2008, showed us exactly how glamorous they could be by dressing up as the Pussycat Dolls. Woo-hoo! Thunderbirds are... You know.
-
The Indian Premier League featured many fine and wonderful things, but few as good as the cheerleaders. A bold cricketing experiment, the Aussie girls dazzled Indian crowds - and best of all, turned out to be Alpha readers. Meet Stacey Ceric, Emily McKie and Rosalind Evans.
-
Every day for months and months, Alpha staff watched Fuel TV, impressed by the skaters, the boarders and the amazing Hotties who said interesting stuff while wearing bikinis. Finally, in October 2008, we snapped and got them all in a photo studio. Tough day's work, that was.
-
In Issue 38 former Ironwoman Jade Sutcliffe appears in two very skimpy outfits; in one shot, she's sitting in a chair throwing dice at the camera. There must be a reason why, but it doesn't matter: she looks great and seems like a very nice lady. Actually, at one point Jade, who appears on the NRL Footy Show, says she has "always gambled" so maybe that's why. Phew.
-
If anyone is a Friend Of Alpha (FOA), it's Emma Snowsill, who has, over the years, agreed to break into her punishing training schedule to glam up for us. Fortunately our demands didn't make much difference: her front-running victory in the Beijing triathlon was one of the highlights of the games. For this shoot, she came along with Emma Moffatt (Beijing bronze medallist) and one of the year's other form triathletes, Erin Densham.
-
Don’t let the skimpy clothes and make-up fool you: Stacey McMahon (June 2008 issue) can ride this bike faster than you, and the 125CC rider has broken bones in the pursuit of speed. “I’m not going to tell I’m not scared. I am,” she says. “But that’s why it’s so exciting.” When not riding bikes, Stacey’s running her modelling agency and shooting and starring in her own line of sexy bikini calendars.
-
What do you do with one of Australia’s best basketball players? Put her in frilly underwear and tie her up, of course (May 2008 issue). To add to the excitement, she even talked tough, telling Olympic rivals the USA that “We’re not going to be Team USA’s little bitch”. The Adelaide Lightning and Opals guard is clearly not one to be messed with.
-
Ah, Tatiana. She may have left the pole vault, but she’s never left our hearts. In our April 2008 issue she happily agreed to show off the results of all her training for TV show Gladiators. “Before I was a gladiator my diet was a lot of gelato, some cakes, coffee,” she said. “Now I’m eating five high-protein meals a day.” Hot damn, but it was worth it.
-
The Hockeyroos have done it tough of late, but one bright spot is Kate Hollywood (March 2008 issue). Between endless fitness and skills sessions leading up to the Olympics, we gave her a break and turned her into the glamorous blonde bombshell we know she is. If only all PE teachers looked like this one.
-
Twenty-year-old surf lifesaving athlete Rique graced our February 2008 issue and immediately put all our Byron Bay readers offside by dissing the surf there. "There's better surf at Curl Curl," she says, and proved it by moving to Sydney and joining Manly SLSC. Needless to say, Rique is also in modelling demand, last seen on a catwalk wearing some of Bonds' finest.
-
She's a record breaking, podium-hopping swimming world champ. Who knew she'd look so good without a swim cap and goggles? Libby strikes a pose for our April 2007 issue.
-
As a special Christmas present to weary readers, our December 2007 issue featured some of Australia's best and brightest female sports stars photographed in weird, wonderful and beautiful ways. From Stephanie Rice to Penny Taylor, Claire Mallett and many more, these girls are hotter than an oven left on in a kitchen at the centre of the sun.
-
Yes, quite literally the second bit of December 2007's fabled collection of hotties.
-
As the most successful female surfer ever, Layne Beachley has never been afraid to swim against the tide. In January 2007, she put Alpha in it's place.
-
The Fox foxes graced our January 2008 issue and quickly gave us their credentials as two of Fox Sports' finest reporters. Both Melanie McLaughlin (dark hair) and Sarah Jones know sport inside out and have done the hard yards before the glamour jobs came calling. We're just lucky that they look so beautiful while they're doing them.
-
Alpha talked to surf-lifesaving athlete Candice in November 2007, not too long after the "Dunny Bill Williams" incident, in which her and Sunny Bill did something in a pub toilet. She told us about her attempt to win an ironwoman title, but we were still thinking about the other thing. In the end, we shot her in roller boots alongside a masked wrestler in silver paint, and that seemed to satisfy everyone.
-
Shot for December '07's Hot issue, here are a few photos of the lovely Candice Falzon that never made it into the mag. These selection decisions are never easy; fortunately, this being the wonderful internet, we don't have to make them...
-
The multi-talented sports reporter Tiff Cherry appeared in our September 2007 issue, looking 1950s-perfect. It's a complete change of image for Cherry, an ex-triathlete and hurdler, who has done stints as Richmond Tigers physio and boundary rider on the old Fox Footy Show. Time to put a dime in the juke box before catching a sled down to the drive-in...
-
In a moment of "we knew her before nearly anyone, so there", let us present Olympic champion Emma Snowsill, from way back in August '07. Back then, of course, she was just tiny, determined and running away from grizzly bears in Boulder, Colorado. Alpha put her in a box full of lights and took photos of her, because that's what we do.
-
Ah, innocent times. As new kid on the block Stephanie Rice lounged in a pool for our July '07 issue, she talked about the new sensation of signing autographs and swapping coaching tips with boyfriend Eamon Sullivan. In the next year, of course, it was hello global fame, hello Olympic gold and goodbye Eamon.
-
Just 18 when she appeared in our January '06 issue, Lauren was already focused on twin ambitions: modelling and beating the hell out of everyone on water skis. She wasn't messing about, having just won the Formula 2 World Championship. "There are two types of tournament," she said. "Jumps and tricks, and speed - I do speed."
-
In April 2006, we took beautiful mountain biker Niki Gudex to the bush with a bike, a collection of dresses and a photographer with equipment that can do funny things to pic colour. The fact that everything turned out well is a testament to Niki, the toughest, beautest lady ever to change a tyre.
-
When Alpha interviewed Mikaela, then 20, in October 2006, she was at that stage of her young career when her life was basketball, followed by basketball, with a side serving of basketball. She hadn't had a night out for a year and preferred a gym to a party. It's paid off (thank God) - she's cemented a position at the Sydney Flames and plays for the Australian Under-21 team.
-
In May 2006, Claire Mallett was suffering an identity problem: people kept thinking she was a pole vaulter, mainly because Tatiana Grigorieva, another tall, glamorous blonde, er, does the pole vault. In fact, 1.86m Mallett is a high jumper and, as we can see here, a pretty good model. Like Tatiana. Sorry.
-
The gorgeous and talented Kristie lit up our January 2007 issue, when she put on a little black number, a pout and a windswept look. Of course, there's far more to her than that: having grown up the daughter of golf legend Jack Newton, she'd gone to uni and done other things with her life, before bowing to the inevitable and hitting the pro golf tour. "Dad's a hard marker," she admitted. "I struggle to get an eight out of 10 from him." She gets a 10 from Alpha, no problem.
-
Back in December 2006, Grace, a curvy staple of bloke's mags, had undergone a bit of a life change. The TV presenter had gone all healthy on us - eating better and taking part in several triathlons. The extra muscles had cost her a little modelling work, but from these shots, we can't see why. Someone had even chatted her up during a race.
-
There's an enduring fascination with female TV presenters, especially those in sport. Thanks to the arrival of those like Amanda Flynn, Lee Furlong and Stephanie Brantz, who combine reporting smarts, presenting skills, impressive knowledge and, frankly, beauty, that fascination has only increased. By September 2006, Alpha just had to get them out from behind that desk.
-
One of the dominant players in female basketball for several years, 1.96m Lauren Jackson was happy to take a bit of a risk for Alpha's shoot in February 2007. Sick of tracksuits and T-shirts, she'd already posed nude for Black + White magazine and was nearly as daring this time around. "I'm an athlete but I'm a girl, too," she said. "This stuff is fun. I love getting made up and looking good."
-
If there was anyone in the universe who hadn’t heard of the lovely Miss Rice before the Olympics, they probably have now. When we spoke to her (July 2008 issue), the swimmer said, “I’d be disappointed with anything less than Olympic gold. I set very high expectations.” One month later, the alleged “party girl” swam off with three gold medals and a few more hits on that Facebook page.
-
More than 1.83m of beauty and power, Penny Taylor, here looking moody for our December '07 issue, is one of the world's great basketballers, with a World Championship gold medal and a contract at the Phoenix Mercury in her back pocket.
-
In early 2006, equestrian and model Jade Garel gave the Alpha editor his one-in-a-lifetime chance of putting a big horse in a photo shoot. "Me want horsey," he said, so down to the stables we went. It's to Jade's credit she survived the experience looking absolutely stunning. No word on the fate of the horse.
-
These days, sports reporter and presenter Stephanie can be found in the very proper environment of Channel Nine, where slightly racy shoots like this one would have to be approved by 15 layers of management, then come with the request she wears a big overcoat. For our pre FIFA World Cup issue in June '06, however, she was at SBS and we could get away with all sorts. Doesn't she look great?
