AFL Draft: The Big Five

As the hype from draft week dies down and players get acquainted with their new clubs, Alpha looks at the top five picks and rates their potential. Do you agree with our comments? What else do you know about these players? Get typing and let us know what you think.

Pick 1: Tom Scully (Melbourne)
Came from: Dandenong Stingrays (south east Melbourne)
What can he do?: Scully is believed to be the hardest non professional AFL player going around. It’s his ability to run through any pack and go for the ball no matter how impossible the clearance seems, along with his guts and determination, that makes him fitting at no.1 pick.
Strategy: Melbourne’s lack of success over the last 3 years have made them very deserving of the top two draft picks this time around. Getting a great clearance player like Scully will hopefully inject some life into the team and make them intimidating once more.
Prediction: It’ll take him at least a year to get up with the big boys, but he’s touted to be the next Chris Judd so his potential is endless.

Pick 2: Jack Trengove (Melbourne)
Came from: Sturt (south of Adelaide)
What can he do?: Like Scully, Trengrove is an excellent midfielder, and has the extra quality of finishing his clearances with accurate kicking. He and Scully will work well together.
Strategy: Besides his obvious talent, Trengrove’s smarts under pressure will encourage a winning culture in a club that so badly needs it.
Prediction: Could be a match winner for Melbourne with his brilliant finishes. If he makes an impact on a close encounter early in the season, an injected confidence could take him to new heights.

Pick 3: Dustin Martin (Richmond)
Came from: Bendigo Pioneers (north-west Melbourne)
What can he do?: Midfielders are dominating this year’s draft, and yet another quick multi tasker is benefiting from the ever evolving AFL style. Martin posted the second fasted 20m sprint time at Draft Camp, and can use the ball well on the run.
Strategy: After choosing talls in last year’s draft, Richmond will be looking to build on quicks in 2010, and Martin will take the team in this direction.
Prediction: Any new blood at Richmond is a good thing, and this firecracker will happily take on the strong training ethos led by Cousins. Richmond won’t make the finals this year, but in 2011 they should make it with positive quick players like Martin.

Pick 4: Anthony Moribito (Fremantle)
Came from: Peel Thunder (south of Perth)
What can he do?: Moribito has been likened to Goodes with his talents in the forward line. He’s also pretty damn quick, making him available for a wing or midfield position. He won’t have to move far to his new found club, making the settling in process much easier.
Strategy: He has more muscle and size than the top 3 picks, so Freo will be hoping he can cut it against the professionals straight away. They’ll also be wanting to build some depth in their list as a safety net for injuries, and Moribito’s flexible positioning will assist this.
Prediction: Freo are the only team still waiting on the illustrious premiership cup in their currently empty cabinet. They could pick God in the draft and won’t get the silverware next year, or the next, or the next…

Pick 5: Ben Cunnington (North Melbourne)
Came from: Geelong Falcons (south west of Melbourne)
What can he do?: Another top midfielder, who much like Scully goes hard at the ball and has a never give up attitude. Coming from an area that has enjoyed AFL success over the last 3 years, and a club that have produced stars before (e.g. Jonathon Brown, Luke Hodge, Gary Ablett Jnr) it’s clear where he gets his winning attitude.
Strategy: North Melbourne has had a horror run of injuries this year, so if a draft pick has working arms and legs they’ll be good for the Roos. In terms of Cunnington, it’s another case of picking up and coming midfielders who’ll challenge the best of the midfielders, i.e. Geelong and St Kilda.
Prediction: The Kangaroos were only 2 wins behind 9th placed 2008 premiership side Hawthorn this year, which shows how quickly a team with a good set up can turn around their luck. With a clean injury list, they could almost break the 8.
