As Football gets serious... Alpha corners the men who hold season 2010 in their hands. We have an exclusive interview with STEVE JOHNSON, the Geelong star that sees things others don’t. Now that time has reduced the playing career of Javed Miandad to the word “legend” and a collection of pretty good stats, it’s easy to forget just what a total arse he could be when he was playing – bad-tempered, argumentative, disruptive, arrogant… And even now he’s long retired, he’s still around, barking angrily at anyone who’ll listen.
As the Bucket sits in his lonely cupboard typing this, the last rites are being said over Pakistan’s Test series against Australia. Yes, it’s a 0-3 loss, but the way good old Javed is acting, his country came to Australia with high expectations, a tough, skilled, experienced outfit and have let themselves and everyone else down.
In fact, the side left a war-torn country, having not played much cricket in the past 10 years, with a bunch of raw, talented youngsters, given laughing-stock status against one of the world’s best teams. “I didn't say that he would be punished, I said he’d be the subject of an investigation.”
FIFA genius Sepp Blatter on Thierry Henry’s handball. Sounds rather sinister, doesn’t it?
Sad to see yet another abnormally large American football bloke dying at a young age. Gaines Adams of the Chicago Bears died of a heart attack at 26, part of the mysterious (drugs) trend of athletes in the prime of life suddenly and for no apparent reason (drugs! Hello? It’s performance-enhancing drugs) passing on from ailments that normally only affect the over-70s. Whatever is causing this (drugs, drugs, drugs, drugs, drugs and drugs) let’s hope the mystery is solved soon.
In the latest round of the aerials world cup – pay attention back there! – you’ll notice that Aussie Lydia Lassila landed a couple of jumps so good to win it, she beat a record set by Jacqui Cooper. Not only is she just about the world’s best, Lydia is gunning for gold at the Winter Olympics AND graces the new issue of Alpha, currently on the shelves, looking fantastic (her and the magazine).
